San Diego / Culture, habitat, harbor
Three days.
Three kinds
of shoreline city.
Give Balboa Park its collections, La Jolla its habitat boundaries and the bay its crossing. A good stay does not need a drive across the county between every stop.

Choose park, coast or bay

Balboa Park
Balboa Park is a large cultural landscape with museums, gardens and separate attractions. Choose one or two interests before buying a pass; the zoo is a substantial visit with its own admission and should not be treated as a quick extra.

La Jolla Coast
La Jolla combines coastal walks, coves and protected wildlife habitat. The right route follows current access and marine conditions, with clear boundaries between observing animals, swimming and walking on cliffs.

San Diego Harbor & Coronado
The harbor offers maritime museums, public waterfront and a ferry connection to Coronado. Choose between a substantial museum visit and a longer bay outing so the day does not become a sequence of queues and transfers.

For a first three-day visit, one well-chosen base can support the main contrasts. A longer beach stay may justify moving, but include luggage and check-in time before assuming a split stay improves the trip. The lowest room rate is not always the lowest total when daily transport and parking are added.
SAN does not have a Trolley station at the terminal
The airport lists MTS Route 992 for the downtown connection and the free San Diego Flyer for Old Town Transit Center. Its current guidance also describes the request stop for a Middletown connection. Choose the route that fits the hotel, not simply the first rail symbol on a map. The Trolley itself does not stop inside the airport terminals.

Count the terminal pickup, any transfer and the final walk with bags. Check the actual day’s service and return route before relying on transit for an early flight. If a complete authorized car journey better suits the group, compare that total rather than only the bus or rail fare.
Culture, coast and harbor without repeated cross-city drives
Balboa Park day · One principal collection
Choose a museum or garden interest, then connect a manageable part of the public landscape. The zoo is a substantial alternative with its own admission, not a brief addition that fits after every cultural visit.
La Jolla day · Land first
Choose a public coastal route and observe wildlife from permitted space. Add a village meal and a shorter second section only if it suits the conditions. A water activity needs a separate operator, suitability and weather decision.
Harbor day · Museum or crossing emphasis
Choose a maritime museum with time to explore, or make Coronado the day’s main purpose. A short bay crossing may fit after a museum, but an ocean-beach afternoon on the far side needs more than the ferry’s sailing time.
These are editorial planning blocks, not personally timed tours. Move the exposed coastal day when conditions make that useful, while respecting reservations and individual opening calendars. A long meal, a museum that holds your attention or a slow return should be able to change the optional part without ruining the plan.
An extra day should add depth, not only mileage
If the zoo is a priority, give it a real day and compare its own admission with any multi-attraction product you are considering. If a beach stay is the priority, keep more time on that coast. A border crossing or a farther county excursion is a different trip with additional transport and entry considerations, not a casual final stop on this city plan.
Meals can reinforce the geography: eat around the park day’s actual return, in La Jolla during the coastal outing, or near the harbor before the ferry. Ask about ingredients and choose seating when a rest is needed. A popular restaurant across the city is not automatically a better choice than a suitable meal near the place you came to explore.
A car may help on selected days, but keep parking and the final walk in the comparison. Public transport can serve some journeys well without serving every coastal access point equally. Plan each day around its real destinations rather than deciding that the whole stay must use one mode regardless of context.

Before adding more to the day
Can I combine all three areas in one day?
That would sacrifice most of the visits to travel. Choose one main area and a compatible smaller addition, or give the city more usable days.
Is the airport directly on the Trolley?
No. The airport publishes bus and shuttle connections to the Trolley network. Include the terminal-to-transit segment in the full journey.
