Sierra parks / Choose the base before the trail
Valley.
Giant forest.
Deeper canyon.

These are separate mountain journeys, not three neighboring attractions. Give each landscape its own approach and overnight logic before connecting them into a road trip.
Choose the actual park area

Yosemite Valley
Yosemite Valley offers dramatic views without requiring a difficult hike. The valley floor, waterfalls and higher trails have very different effort and access requirements, so build a first visit around open low-level routes and a realistic parking plan.
Open guide →
Sequoia Giant Forest
The Giant Forest is a high-elevation landscape reached by winding roads. Seeing the giant sequoias can be a short, accessible-focused outing or a longer walk, but the road and weather should be assessed before adding distant park sectors.

Kings Canyon & Grant Grove
Grant Grove and the deeper canyon are not interchangeable stops. Seasonal road access can make the canyon unavailable while the grove remains a worthwhile destination, so choose the actual park area before committing to a drive.

NPS: Sequoia and Kings Canyon planning
A useful first decision is how many actual park days the trip contains after transfer days are removed. Two nights can provide one full day, not two. When the schedule is short, choose one landscape and explore it properly rather than using most of the available time to move between names.
Three trip shapes, from selective to extended
One park base · Choose the main interest
Use a limited Yosemite Valley stay for granite walls and meadow walks, or a Giant Forest stay for sequoias. Do not add another major park just because it appears in the same guide. A short trip can be complete with one landscape.
Two bases · Treat the transfer as a travel day
Connect the chosen parks only when the schedule allows moving accommodation and supplies without sacrificing the entire next visit. Keep a modest arrival activity rather than planning a major hike immediately after the mountain drive.
A longer Sierra sequence · Add the canyon deliberately
Give Grant Grove and an open Cedar Grove excursion their own time. The deeper canyon can be worth an overnight or separate day, but the road and seasonal return need to work. Do not attach it to the end of a full Giant Forest walk.
These are editorial trip shapes rather than mileage guarantees. Use the actual road route and current conditions to calculate each transfer. A straight line across the mountains is not evidence of a public through-road, and a navigation estimate does not include every stop, queue or tired-driver break.
Entry rules, accommodation and transport are separate arrangements
NPS says Yosemite is not using timed-entry reservations in 2026. That does not remove park admission or separate reservations for accommodation and specific activities. Read the policy for the actual year instead of carrying forward a previous summer’s entry system.

YARTS and Yosemite’s internal shuttles serve different purposes. Sequoia’s free park shuttles are seasonal and do not connect the parks as a general Sierra network. The September 2026 check shows Sequoia’s summer service dates ending on September 7; do not build a later trip around a summer bus simply because its route map remains online.
Plan for the mountain area, not the city you flew into
Snow, fire effects, road works and changing visibility can alter the park day independently of comfortable weather in a California city. Read the current road and trail information close to departure, then follow the actual restrictions on arrival. A seasonal road being open on a past visit does not establish that it will be open now.

Arrange fuel, food and drinking water before relying on a remote facility. A hotel, campground, visitor center and restaurant can have different seasons. If a particular service is essential, confirm it directly and keep an alternative within the same approach rather than expecting every park area to offer the same facilities.
Choose walks by surface, elevation gain and the group’s ability. A short distance does not necessarily mean an easy return, especially when the first part goes downhill. Leave room for a lower-level or shorter visit that still has a purpose; the trip should not depend on everyone completing the longest trail pictured in the guide.
Before the mountain drive
Can these three park areas be a single day trip?
Not as the meaningful visits described here. Choose one main park area or give the route multiple bases and usable days, including the transfers.
Does one shuttle connect Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon?
No. The services described here have distinct routes and seasons. Confirm each actual connection instead of treating the Sierra as one transit-served attraction.
